Abstract:Objective To observe the expression levels of serum ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase-l1 (UCH-L1) and S100B protein in peripheral blood of children with epilepsy and to explore its significance. Methods A total of 80 children with epilepsy who were newly diagnosed in Tangshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Hebei Province (hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”) from October 2018 to October 2019 and had seizure within 24 hours before admission were selected as the case group, and a total of 80 healthy children in our hospital were selected as the control group. Fasting venous blood was collected in the morning, and the serum UCH-L1 and S100B protein expression levels were detected by double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the serum UCH-L1 and S100B protein expression levels were compared among the children with different seizure duration and seizure types in the case group. Results UCH-L1 and S100B protein levels in the case group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.01). UCH-L1 and S100B protein levels in epilepsy duration ≥5 min group were higher than those in epilepsy duration < 5 min group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). UCH-L1 and S100B protein levels in generalized seizure group were significantly higher than those in focal seizure group (P < 0.01). Conclusion UCH-L1 and S100B protein levels in the peripheral blood of children with epilepsy are increased, and the increase of both is related to the duration and type of epileptic seizure.
