Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of osteoporosis on the treatment effect of middle-aged and elderly patients with severe chronic periodontitis. Methods Forty-eight middle-aged and elderly patients with severe chronic periodontitis who were treated in the Department of Periodontology, Yancheng Stomatological Hospital of Jiangsu Province from January 2017 to December 2020 were selected. According to whether they had osteoporosis or not, they were divided into observation group and control group, with 24 cases in each group. The periodontal clinical indicators (plaque index [PLI], sulcus bleeding index [SBI], periodontal pocket depth [PD]), inflammatory factor indicators (interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-6, tumor necrosis factor α [TNF-α]), and imaging indicators. Results After treatment, the PLI, SBI, and PD of the two groups were lower than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, there was no significant difference in periodontal clinical indicators between the two groups (P > 0.05). After treatment, the levels of inflammatory factors in the two groups were lower than those before treatment, while those of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion Osteoporosis affects the inflammatory factor levels and the effect of alveolar bone repair and regeneration after basic treatment for middle-aged and elderly patients with severe chronic periodontitis.
